CLEMATIS 'Étoile Violette'
Clematis, Etoile Violette Clematis, Viticella Clematis
Sometimes listed as a cultivar of Clematis viticella, the hybrid 'Etiole Violette' is a vigorous climber that offers many smaller-sized violet-purple flowers late in the season. These are sometimes nodding and borne in profusion.
Hybrid clematis is a hardy deciduous woody vine that climbs by twining stems. The vines are lined with green compound leaves that appear in spring. The smaller flowers appear from summer to fall and are followed by fluffy clusters of silvery seeds.
Plant this vine in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows and flowers best if its roots remain cool under a vegetative layer or thick mulch. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.
This is a Group 3 clematis, which means it bears flowers on the current year’s growth and can be hard pruned.
