Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
Atragene Clematis, Clematis, Willy Clematis
The delicate, nodding flowers of ‘Willy’ are soft pale pink with a central cup of ivory green staminodes in the center of each. This pretty early bloomer is an alpina hybrid that was bred in Holland by Pieter Zwijnenburg.
Hybrid clematis is a hardy deciduous woody vine that climbs by twining stems. The vines are lined with green compound leaves that appear in spring. The small flowers appear from spring to summer and are followed by fluffy clusters of silvery seeds.
Clematis grows best in sites with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It grows and flowers best if its roots remain cool under a vegetative layer or thick mulch. If left unpruned, plants will sporadically flower again in fall. As with most clematis, this selection adds a vertical element to the garden and looks best when trained on a fence, trellis or pergola.
This is a Group 1 clematis, which means its flower buds develop on the previous year's growth, so pruning should be done after it blooms if at all.
