General Description

Aggressively finding and holding its place in the landscape, stickbush has soft fuzzy leaves that are a handsome backdrop to the tight, wedding bouquet-like cluster of double white flowers that appear in spring and summer. An evergreen, clambering and thicket-producing shrub, it is from southeastern China, the Philippines and southern Japan. It dark green, soft fuzzy leaves can become as large as a dinner plate. They are widely oval or robustly triangular in shape, usually found near the top of the unbranching stem that rises from the ground. A crushed leaf has a mild, musky scent. Anytime from midspring into summer, the stem tips can display a cluster of fragrant, small, rose-like, white flowers. Occasionally having hints of peach in the petals, the flowers usually dry to a tan and persist on the plant.

Stickbush grows well in any well-draining soil that has organic matter in its makeup. It can proliferate very quickly in full sun exposures, growing only slightly less aggressively and not flowering as much in partially shaded areas. It can tolerate wet soils and drought to various degrees, too, which adds to the burden of constraining this plant once introduced into the landscape. In many tropical regions it has been labelled a disruptive invasive plant. Elsewhere, only use it in the rear of the mixed border where it is not considered a prohibited-use plant. Even then, make sure to prune off or dig up young suckering shoots that will arise away from the parent plant's base.
