General Description

The fuzzy, bright green leaves of Javanese glorybower and its clusters of bright orange flowers in the warm months are a beautiful bu pesky addition to a tropical garden. A clumping and suckering evergreen shrub from Sri Lanka and Indonesia, it will aggressively spread itself across the garden, filling in gaps between or shading out other shrubs. The leaves are rounded, almost heart-shaped, tapering to a modest tip, colored bright green and are downy textured. Most heavily concentrated at the semi-woody stem tips, each leaf stem petiole has a reddish tint, as do some of the leaf veins. During the warmest parts of spring through the autumn, each stem displays a rounded cluster of bright orange to orange-red, trumpet-shaped flowers that have long stamens. Butterflies and hummingbirds will frequent the blossoms, and they are especially favored by swallowtail butterflies. The seed coats are light blue to turquoise in color.

Javanese glorybower will grow successfully and aggressively in all full sun to partial shade environs in fertile, moist soils. Typically evergreen, they may drop leaves during winters that are cool and dry. In areas of light winter frosts, the plants will be knocked back to the ground, but will sprout back from the roots the following spring. To control this plant, prune each stem back hard after blooming and dig out the suckers that will quickly grow and begin to choke out and shade nearby desirable garden plants. Bronze to purple-colored leaves contrast the orange flowers on the cultivar ‘Bronze Prince’, which is equally invasive.
