General Description

Long elegant leaves, and attractive pendent flowerbuds followed by decorative white flowers gives bridal veil a reputation as being one of autumn’s most magnificent plants. This tender tropical shrub with long stems that gracefully arch is native from India and China into Southeast Asia. The foliage is glossy dark green and leaves are narrowly lance-shaped with obvious indented veins and tips that are curled. In early fall the branch tips form elegant and beautiful pendent flowerbud clusters that look like green or pink crystal chandeliers. A few weeks later the pinkish-green buds open to curving white petaled flowers that have long, white, curling stamens and are pollinated by butterflies and bees. The fruits that ensue are blue and contrast nicely against the star-shaped, coral-red calyces - the leaves that once protected the developing flowerbuds.

Grow the elegant bridal veil shrub in a fertile, well-draining acidic or neutral soil in full sun to partial shade. As the stems are often tall and unbranching, it makes a terrific shrub for the rear of the mixed border nestled among broader shrubs. The branches can be pruned back to keep the shrub shorter, but cease any tip pruning after midsummer so that the fall flowering is not reduced. It may also be grown as a large container specimen or sprawling fan-shaped espalier.
