Family
Clethraceae
Botanical Name
Clethra alnifolia
Plant Common Name
Coastal Sweetpepperbush, White Summersweet
General Description
Prized for its handsome foliage, compact upright habit, and fuzzy spikes of fragrant flowers, this suckering deciduous shrub is native to the eastern United States from Maine to Florida. Appearing in midsummer, the spicy-scented white or pink flowers attract butterflies and bees. Peppercorn-like seedheads follow the flowers, providing winter interest. The leaves turn butter-yellow in fall. Several cultivars are widely available, including pink-flowered and dwarf selections such as 'Compacta', 'Hummingbird', 'Pink Spires', 'Ruby Spice' and White Doveā¢.
Summersweet grows best in a moist, acid soil with good drainage in full sun to partial shade. Occasionally wet, soggy soils are tolerated. Avoid planting it in extremely hot or dry locations. It works well in mixed borders, foundation plantings, and informal hedges. It even tolerates heavy shade, but growth habit is sparser and flowering is greatly diminished. It's a very adaptable shrub, and has proven more heat and drought tolerant than cinnamon clethra (Clethra acuminata).
