Family

Scrophulariaceae

Botanical Name

COLLINSIA verna

Plant Common Name

Spring Blue-eyed Mary

General Description

Delicate little blue and white two-lipped flowers decorate this sweet cool season annual for around three weeks in spring or summer, depending on geography. The low-growing plants tend to grow in moist forested areas where soil is rich and sunlight dappled.

The small ephemeral plants have oval to lance-shaped leaves that are opposite and clasp the stems. The plants survive through winter and flower when temperatures become favorable in spring. Lots of little two-lipped flowers are produced in whorls clustered on upright stems. Each little flower has two prominent petal lobes of white on top and two of blue on the bottom. Native bees pollinate the blooms and the plants produce many seeds that will germinate in fall or winter for the following season.

This is a pleasing annual for naturalistic woodland plantings. Sprinkle seeds where the ground is moist and some sunlight pokes through the trees above.
