Family

Araceae

Botanical Name

COLOCASIA affinis var. jeningsii

Plant Common Name

Elephant Ear, Taro

General Description

Dwarf Jenings elephant ear is a tropical perennial native to Polynesia and the rainforest regions of Asia. It is primarily grown for its large egg-shaped, velvety leaves. They are dark green with chartreuse veins and a silvery-green center. During the growing season yellow-green spathe flowers appear but are generally overshadowed by foliage. It ear goes dormant following its bloom but re-emerges when temperatures warm.

The dwarf Jenings' elephant ear prefers partial shade and protection from scorching sun rays. It requires moist organic-rich soil and loves wet feet. In cold zones, or where it is marginally hardy, dig the tubers in the fall, and store them in a dry, frost-free location for the winter.

Grow elephant ear indoors as a houseplant in temperate zones or set it out in a shady site in a tropical garden. It is suited to the shallow areas of water gardens. Or treat it as an annual and grow it in a container.
