Family

Gesnariaceae

Botanical Name

Columnea x banksii

Plant Common Name

Banks Goldfish Plant, Goldfish Plant, Goldfish Vine

General Description

Commonly called Banks' goldfish plant, Columnea x banksii is a hybrid of two spectacular tropical geseriads that originate from the rain and cloud forests of the American tropics, Columnea oerstediana and C. schiedeana. In the wild, these plants are tree-dwelling, or epiphytic, and have lush green stems that cascade downwards. When growing conditions are favorable, this hybrid produces a wealth of scarlet flowers with yellow markings at the throat. Like most rain forest epiphytes, high humidity and filtered, indirect sun are needed for strong growth and flowering.

The trailing stems of goldfish plant are lined with small, deep green, elliptical leaves tinted with bronze. These remain attractive year round. The flowers are borne in rows along the leaf axils and appear throughout the year as long as growing conditions are favorable. The tubular, five-lobed blooms come in vibrant shade of scarlet and yellow stripes decorate the throat of each. Hummingbirds pollinate the flowers and small, inconsequential fruits follow.

In most parts of the world, Banks' goldfish plant is grown as a container specimen. It requires well-drained growing medium and bright, indirect light or partial sun. High ambient humidity is also necessary. During the cool winter months, reduce watering and keep the foliage completely moisture-free. Fungal leaf spot and botrytis are common diseases and insect pests like whitefly, aphids and spidermites are attracted to Columnea foliage.

This is an ideal plant for tropical containers and hanging baskets. It also has a place in hummingbird gardens.
