General Description
Hawaiian Ti (pronounced "tee") is a broadleaf evergreen shrub, resembling a palm tree that is native to tropical Southeast Asia. Unbranched stems support strap-like leaves which can be dark green, red, yellow, pink or variegated. More intense colors are produced in full sun, although some cultivars cannot handle intense sunrays. White to purple flowers appear in summer followed by red berries. The ti is clump forming and sometimes suckering, though not invasive.
Place ti in a moist well-draining rich soil in partial sun to partial shade. Lack of water or too much direct sunlight will cause leaves to brown or curl. The leaves are often used in floral arrangements and for making leis. In temperate regions, it is frequently grown as a houseplant.
Some beautiful cultivars, such as 'Bolero Bicolor', 'Wiley's Gold', 'Bryan Diamond', 'Maui Pink' and 'Purple Prince' have particularly beautiful leaves in partial sun. 'Xerox' and 'Auntie Lou' are two cultivars that handle full tropical sun quite well.
