Plant Common Name
Cordyline, Green Dracaena
General Description
Green dracaena is an upright sparsely branched, thick-stemmed, tree-like perennial native to New Zealand. Its branch ends are punctuated with dense clusters of narrow, lance-shaped, light to medium green leaves with distinct red veins. Long dense panicles of cream colored flowers adorn the plant in the summer. There are several nice cultivars, such as 'Purpurea' which has bronze-purple tinted leaves.
This tropical plant prefers moist, yet well-drained soil and partial sun. In tropical areas it is an attractive evergreen tree and in cooler zones it can be grown in containers indoors or outdoors in the summer.
