COREOPSIS 'Baby Sun' ('('Sonnenkind')')
Coreopsis, Hybrid Tickseed
Throughout summer, the dwarf perennial tickseed, 'Baby Sun', bears a beautiful display of golden-yellow daisies with a touch of burgundy at the base of each petal. Its compact size and tidy habit makes it ideal for small garden spaces spaces and container plantings. Though often listed as a cultivar of Coreopsis lanceolata or C. grandiflora, this Ernst Benary introduction has characteristics of both and is more likely a hybrid.
Flowering begins in early summer and will continue for up to two months if the spent blooms are removed. The flowers are held above its lance-shaped, medium green leaves for full effect. Bees and butterflies hum and flutter among the bright daisies to gather pollen and drink nectar.
Full sun and average to fertile soil with good drainage will produce the best results. Once established, this cultivar can withstand short periods of drought but it looks best with regular water. It is well suited to rock gardens, border edges and informal perennial gardens.
