James Burghardt

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

COREOPSIS grandiflora 'Balcorsunay'(SUNNY DAY) PP17405

Plant Common Name

Large-flowered Coreopsis

General Description

The single golden daisies of Sunny Day will add a flash of bright color to any sunny border. This patented Ball introduction flowers earlier than other large-flowered coreopsis, boasts a neat upright habit and is heavy-flowering.

Large-flowered coreopsis is native to central and eastern North America. It puts forth substantial clumps of medium green foliage in spring. In late spring to early summer it becomes covered with many single golden daisies with fringed petal edges. The blooms stand erect on stiff leafless stems, attract butterflies and will continue blooming if deadheaded regularly.

Like many coreopsis, Sunny Day is a sun-loving plant that does well in average to poor well-drained soil. It can tolerate partial sun but grows leggier in lower light and may require staking. It is also surprisingly drought tolerant once established.

The blooms of large-flowered coreopsis glow in summer and are great for cutting. They make a super addition to sunny perennial borders and wildflower or butterfly gardens.
