General Description

Boasting bright chartreuse-yellow leaves, Lightning Flash tickseed also produces light yellow daisies in midsummer. A perennial wildflower from the interior eastern United States, it has branched stems and leaves made of three lance-shaped leaflets. The foliage emerges a bright yellow or chartreuse, and may become slightly more green-yellow in partial shade or in lower areas on the stem. By late summer, flowers are attracting butterflies and bees with eight light yellow petals around a yellow center disc that quickly becomes purplish brown.

Grow Lightning Flash tickseed in full sun in a well-drained, average to poor soil. Growth is noticeably more lush and in fertile ground and truly does best in areas with a hot, humid summer. Avoid heavy, soggy and highly alkaline soils. Hot, dry winds in full sun will burn the leaves. Plant this perennial in the mixed border to add contrast and brightness around green ornamental grasses or perennials and shrubs. The long stems with bright leaves or pretty flowers make a terrific cutflower.
