CORNUS florida (CHEROKEE SERIES)

Image of Cornus florida (CHEROKEE SERIES)

Family

Cornaceae

Botanical Name

CORNUS florida( CHEROKEE SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Flowering Dogwood

General Description

Members of the Cherokee Series were bred for increased vigor and disease resistance. Like all flowering dogwoods, these medium-sized trees have elegant spreading canopies and originate from southeastern North America. In mid-spring they put forth small clusters of green flowers surrounded by four large bracts that may be rose, creamy white or pink, depending on the selection. Flowers are followed by clusters of bright red berry-like fruits that are eaten by songbirds. The oval green leaves of this fine ornamental turn purple-red in fall.

Though shade tolerant, flowering dogwoods look best when grown in a full to part sun location. They are adapted to a wide range of well-drained, fertile soil types. Enjoy these as specimen trees or massed in wooded gardens with other early flowering trees like eastern redbud. Flowering dogwood is highly susceptible to dogwood anthracnose and powdery mildew, but cultivars in the Cherokee Series are resistant.
