Plant Common Name

Cherokee Daybreak® Flowering Dogwood, Flowering Dogwood

General Description

Cherokee Daybreak® is a variegated selection of flowering dogwood Cornus florida, which is native of southeastern North America. This small deciduous tree has an elegant canopy with spreading, horizontal branches, and it flowers beautifully in mid-spring, covering itself with upward-facing white blooms made of four overlapping bracts (petal-like leaves) surrounding a green center of tiny flowers that give way to clusters of bright red berry-like fruits, which are eaten by birds. The leaves of Cherokee Daybreak (also known as'Daybreak') are medium green with creamy-white margins. In autumn they blush a beautiful pink then change to deep red.

Though shade tolerant, the foliage color of this tree looks best when grown in a full to part sun location. Site the tree on fertile, well-drained soil and use it as a specimen or massed in woodland gardens with other early flowering trees like eastern redbud.
