Botanical Name

CORNUS florida 'Gulf Coast Pink'

Plant Common Name

Flowering Dogwood, Gulf Coast Pink Dogwood

General Description

A selection of flowering dogwood Cornus florida, which is native to eastern North America, ‘Gulf Coast Pink’ is notably tolerant of warm climates. It is a small deciduous with an elegant canopy of spreading branches, and it flowers beautifully in mid-spring, covering itself with upward-facing pink blooms made of four overlapping bracts (petal-like leaves) surrounding a green center of tiny flowers that give way to clusters of bright red berry-like fruits, which are eaten by birds. The leaves of ‘Gulf Coast Pink’ are medium green and blush brownish-red in autumn.

Though this cultivar tolerates warm to hot summers, it is also a hardy tree. Site it on fertile, well-drained soil and use it as a specimen or massed in woodland gardens with other early flowering trees like eastern redbud.
