Botanical Name
CORNUS florida 'Ozark Spring'
Plant Common Name
Flowering Dogwood, Ozark Spring Flowering Dogwood
General Description
This dogwood, ‘Ozark Spring’ is a small, deciduous tree with graceful, spreading branches, grown mostly for its beautiful white flowers. Its true flowers are tiny and clustered at the center of four large white bracts (petal-like leaves) that are oval with a dented end, upward-facing and overlapping. This cultivar is a selection of flowering dogwood, a native of eastern North America, chosen at Kansas State University for the greater than usual hardiness of its flower buds. It has reliable red fall color and bright red late summer fruits loved by birds that disappear quickly in the winter.
Plant 'Ozark Spring' in protected areas with slightly acidic soil. A site with good air circulation will help stave off the powdery mildew that plagues flowering dogwoods. This is a beautiful tree when used in the shady mixed border or foundation planting. This cultivar has proven to do well even in cold, dry winters.
