Plant Common Name
Flowering Dogwood, Red Cloud Flowering Dogwood
General Description
This cultivated dogwood variety, ‘Red Cloud,’ is a deciduous tree with graceful, spreading branches, prized for its spring display of beautiful deep pink bloom. Like all dogwoods, its true flowers are tiny, green, and clustered at the center of four far larger bracts (petal-like leaves) that produce this cultivar’s spring show. It is a selection of flowering dogwood, a native of southeastern North America, chosen for its red cloud of bloom. It also has reliable red fall color and bright red late summer fruits. Loved by birds, the fruits soon disappear in winter.
Flowering dogwood is an understory species, adapted to the company of taller trees and at home in partial sun to partial shade on well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A site with good air circulation will help stave off the powdery mildew that plagues flowering dogwoods. This is a beautiful tree in a shady mixed border, foundation planting, or woodland.
