Botanical Name

CORNUS florida 'Sunset'( CHEROKEE SUNSET, CHEROKEE SERIES) PP6305

Plant Common Name

Cherokee Sunset Flowering Dogwood, Flowering Dogwood

General Description

This fine flowering dogwood has more than just beautiful spring flowers. Throughout the growing season, 'Sunset' bears subdued variegated foliage, in shades of yellow-green and green with pink highlights, which turns purple-red in fall. Its leaves contrast nicely with the many spring flowers. These consist of green flower clusters surrounded by four large, rose-red bracts. Later in the season they develop into clusters of bright red berry-like fruits, which are eaten by birds.

Though shade tolerant, flowering dogwood looks best when grown in a full to part sun location. Provide it with fertile, acidic to alkaline soil. In the landscape it is best used as a specimen tree or massed in wooded gardens with other early flowering trees like eastern redbud. This cultivar is considered disease resistant.
