Family

Cornaceae

Botanical Name

CORNUS kousa 'Satomi'

Plant Common Name

Korean Dogwood, Satomi Dogwood

General Description

The Kousa dogwood is a small to medium-sized flowering deciduous tree prized for its hardiness, late bloom and resistance to diseases that typically plague American dogwoods. The cultivar, ‘Satomi,’ is noted for its profusion of dusty pink spring flowers, red fall fruits and brilliant purple-red fall color. It is typically a low-branched tree that develops an elegant spreading canopy with age.

Starting in late spring, ‘Satomi’ will flower for up to four to six weeks. The flowers face upwards along the horizontal stems and are so dense that the tree looks clothed in pink when in full bloom. Each composite flower consists of a central cluster of tiny green fertile flowers surrounded by four large pink bracts (petal-like leaves) that are oval with slightly pointed tips. The true flowers give way to loose clusters of small, round, bumpy red fruits that are edible to humans as well as wildlife, though they are not especially tasty. In fall, its simple green leaves turn glorious shades of reddish purple, and winter landscapes benefit from its pretty mottled, multi-colored bark.

Kousa dogwoods are adaptable to a wide range of soils, but they grow best in well-drained, fertile soil with even moisture. Full to partial sun is best for optimal growth and appearance. During extended periods of drought, supplemental water will keep trees healthy and protect them from leaf scorch. This species is resistant to dogwood anthracnose, a disease that is deadly to American dogwoods (Cornus florida).

These are some of the best trees for year-round beauty. They are ideal specimens for smaller landscapes or large foundations and should be placed in locations where they can be admired at all times.
