General Description
Midwinter Fire bloodtwig dogwood is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with upright branches and a spreading, suckering habit. This compact selection is grown for its colorful young stems of red that turn yellow-green as they age. In the early to midsummer it produces many flat clusters of white flowers followed by small, oval, blue-black fruits, which are attractive to birds. In fall, its medium green leaves turn golden yellow.
This shrub grows best in sites with full sun to partial shade and fertile, well drained but moist soil. It suckers readily and should be hard pruned each year, while dormant, to keep colorful new branches coming and to maintain a manageable size. Cold tolerant and tough, 'Midwinter Fire' is an attractive plant for an informal screen, hedge barrier or naturalistic garden.
