Cardinal redosier dogwood has some of the best red twig color of any Cornus sericea. This large, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub has upright branches and a spreading, suckering habit. Its young stems are bright cardinal red and darken to a richer red in winter. In late spring to early summer it produces many flatted clusters of white flowers followed by small, white, oval fruits that are attractive to birds. In fall, its medium green leaves turn burgundy red.
This shrub grows best in sites with full sun to partial shade and fertile, average to poorly drained soil. It suckers readily and should be hard pruned each year, while dormant, to keep its colorful new branches coming and to maintain a manageable size. Cold tolerant and tough, 'Cardinal' looks super when planted in masses with gold and red winterberries and tall switchgrass.
