Cortaderia selloana 'Splendid Star' PP16277
Pampas Grass, Splendid Star Pampas Grass
One of the signature plants of the vast Argentine plains for which it is named, pampas grass is an immense, clumping, highly ornamental evergreen grass that is grown and naturalized throughout the milder climatic regions of the world. Although usually grown for its large fluffy seedheads on lofty stems, in the case of the dwarf cultivar 'Splendid Star' it is equally valued for the showy longitudinal yellow banding on the relatively compact, folded, fountaining leaves. From late summer into fall, large, plumy heads of silvery white male flowers are held well above the foliage atop stout stalks. They produce no seed and almost no pollen.
This drought- and salt-tolerant grass prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and occasional watering during extended dry spells. Remove brown dead leaves with a rake: the often recommended practice of shearing the clump to the ground can damage or kill the plant. Mass this cultivar as a low hedge or barrier planting, or use it as a specimen or border plant. Place it where its rough, sharp leaf edges do not pose a risk to passersby. Pampas grass has escaped cultivation and is considered an invasive species in some locations.
