Fumariaceae

Botanical Name

CORYDALIS flavula

Plant Common Name

Yellow Fumewort

General Description

Native to moist open woods and rocky slopes of eastern and central North America, this annual bears clusters of pale yellow flowers in spring above overwintering rosettes of lacy divided blue-green leaves. Deployed on upright or sprawling, calf-high stems, the flowers have a gaping mouth and a relatively short down-curved spur. They give rise to small pod-like capsules containing round shiny black seeds that are distributed by ants. Plants will self-sow where happy. This spring ephemeral disappears by late spring.

An ideal subject for the wild garden, this annual prefers partial shade and moist well-drained soil. Seed planted fresh in late spring will germinate in fall.
