General Description

Illuminating the early to mid-spring garden, the openly branching winterhazel produces hundreds of pendent, lightly fragrant yellow blossoms from its smooth, bare branches. Variety calvescens is a large, rounded and wide-spreading deciduous shrub is native to China's mountains. Moderately vigorous when growing, it is typically a multistemmed plant.

Upon the sandy brown, smooth (not fuzzy) branches by mid-spring will be a profusion of short, drooping clusters with bright lemony yellow and fragrant blossoms with short orange pollen-carrying anthers. The dry fruits that follow are a light tan. The oblong oval leaves are a velvety blue-green to dark green, emerging after the flowers. In autumn the foliage may become yellow but usually isn't showy.

Grow this winterhazel variety in partial sun to light shade in an acidy soil that is both acidic and well-draining but moist. Provide more shade or water in areas with hot summers or lacking irrigation. Keep it out of windy locales and be sure to amend clay soils with organic matter so they are friable. Use this winterhazel species as large accent for a mixed shrub border, around a large building's foundation or in a woodland. It is particularly pretty in the woodland when early wildflowers or spring bulbs bloom around its base.

The naturally occurring form veitchiana is slightly more upright in its habit and produces flowers with deep orange-red anthers.
