Common cosmos is a tall, bushy, annual native to fields and open areas of Mexico. This showy species has yielded numerous cultivars throughout the years and has become a beautiful and well-known standby of summer gardens around the world.
Like many annuals, this favorite garden flower grows quickly from seed. Its branched stems are lined with feathery, finely divided, light to medium green leaves that are attractive in and of themselves. A profusion of showy daisies top the stems throughout the summer. The flowers consist of a central yellow eye of disc flowers surrounded by ray petals that may be white, pink, lavender or crimson. Butterflies flutter among the bright, cheerful blooms collecting nectar and pollinating the flowers.
Its Mexican origin rightly suggests common cosmos is a heat-loving plant. Overall, it grows best in full sun and well-drained soil with modest fertility and average moisture. Once the danger of frost has past, sow its seeds directly in the ground. For earlier blooms, start it indoors six weeks before the last frost date. Remove faded blossoms regularly to encourage continued flowering.
The garden placement of this cosmos depends on the cultivar planted. Compact selections, like those in the Sonata series, are tidier and well-suited to more formal garden plantings. Tall cultivars are best planted in wilder, more informal garden settings. Cosmos blooms are great for cutting and tall, long-stemmed plants planted in cutting gardens require staking or they will topple late in the season.
