Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
COSMOS sulphureus( COSMIC SERIES)
Vigorous, compact and free-flowering, Cosmic Series cosmos add brilliancy to the summer garden with their prolific, jewel-like flowers of orange, red and yellow. This strain was developed from golden cosmos, a tall annual species native to fields and open areas of Mexico. They are suitable for use as bedding annuals, in wildflower gardens, or for filling gaps in well-drained mixed borders.
The upright, branching stems of these dwarf, bushy plants are lined with ferny, deeply divided, rich green foliage, and are topped throughout summer with numerous double and semi-double daisies in shades of golden-yellow, orange and scarlet-orange. The flowers are composed of broad yet delicate, somewhat pleated ray petals surrounding bright yellow centers, and are followed by sharp, star-like clusters of brown seeds. Butterflies will visit and flutter among the bright blooms.
After danger of frost has passed, sow the seeds of these heat-loving, drought-tolerant annuals in full sun and moderately moist to somewhat dry, well-drained soil of low to modest fertility. Avoid excessive water and fertilizer, as these can result in leggy growth and fewer flowers. Plants may begin declining by midsummer, but prolonged bloom display can be achieved by sowing seeds in succession. Alternatively, the seeds of existing plants may be gathered and scattered on the ground. They should germinate quickly, resulting in fresh blooms by late summer to fall.
