Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

COTONEASTER glaucophyllus

Plant Common Name

Grey Cotoneaster

General Description

Grey cotoneaster is a large, broadleaf, evergreen shrub native to the Yunnan province of China. It has gray-green leaves and pretty orange-red fruits in autumn. Although the leaves are glossy, they are covered in tiny hairs that give them a silver-gray or blue-green tint. Leaf undersides of this salt-tolerant shrub are usually colored a lighter green, powdery beige or silver. The clusters of white flowers appear in the heat of summer, and develop into showy bunches of orange-red berries that are eaten and spread by birds. In cold temperatures, the leaves carry a blush of purple-red.

Grey cotoneaster is a resilient shrub, growing in a wide range of soils, all of which should never be soggy. It is tolerant of nutrient-poor soils, drought and sea- salt spray. Full to partial shade exposures promote fullest growth and best flowerng, but also means best fruiting, which can lead to hungry birds dispersing seeds across the landscape. In some subtropical regions, such as Australia, where it causes ecological problems this species is a restricted use plant. Where not a threat to native plants, grey cotoneaster can be used for a large, dense informal hedge or screen.
