Botanical Name

CRASSULA muscosa var. muscosa

Plant Common Name

Watch Chain Plant

General Description

This beautiful fine textured succulent has fine, elongated, procumbent stems lined with small, dense, fleshy, scale-like leaves that give it an almost moss-like appearance. South African in origin, it is adapted to high light and a very long dry season. This variety is larger than the species but is otherwise identical.

Overall, it has a spreading habit but its central stems are upright, while the peripheral stems tend to fall to the side—giving the plant a dense and tidy appearance. In cultivation its foliage color is bright green, but in the wild it develops burnished bronze tints when growing in full sun and exposed to hot and dry weather. It is a spring bloomer that blooms infrequently indoors. Its small flowers are waxy, white and starry.

Watch chain is valued most as a container plant because its blooms are inconspicuous and its textured foliage very appealing. Like most succulents, it grows best in very porous granular soil whether grown in a pot or a frost-free rock garden. As a potted specimen ages, its growth becomes very dense and vulnerable to over-watering because the center won’t dry out as quickly as the edges. At this stage, it is often advisable to divide and repot it. Succulent aficionados love this plant for adding fine texture in succulent bowls or troughs.
