Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
Green hawthorn is a thorny, vase shaped, deciduous tree that is native to the eastern United States. The glossy green foliage turns red in the fall, while white flowers appear in late spring, attracting bees. There is a showy display of large, red fruit into fall and winter.
Green hawthorn can grow in most soil types but is best in non-alkaline, well drained soil and full sun. This tree is ideal as a specimen or street tree but be aware of the stiff, long thorns that line the wiry branches when situating it near roads, walkways or in the backyard. The selection 'Winter King' has excellent habit and flowering and fruiting qualities.
