General Description

The variegated Asian crinum lily is a large, free-blooming, fragrant, bulbous perennial for warm climates or containers. While the white flowers are pretty, it's the striped white and green foliage that attracts attention! Native to tropical Southeast Asia, 'Variegatum' grows and increases moderately in suitable conditions and blooms much less frequently than the typical green-leaf form. In marginal regions, frost kills the leaves but the plant slowly recovers and new leaves grow with the return of mild temperatures. Over time the bulb grows larger and the broad strap-shaped leaves emerge in a trunk-like mass that separates into individual flaring, glossy leaves. The bulb produces daughter bulbs slowly and one plant eventually becomes a mass. The thick succulent flower stems are topped by fountain-like clusters of large fragrant flowers with narrow widely-separated pure-white petals that account for one of its common names, spider lily. All parts of the plant are toxic.

Variegated Asian crinum lily grows and flowers best in partial sun on well-drained but moist soil that is rich in humus. It tolerates full sun if the soil is evenly moist and fertile. Once it is well-established, the plant tolerates periods of dry conditions. It is used as a specimen plant for its size and sculptural shape as well as ornate foliage.
