General Description

A visit to any Pacific Island resort often reveals hedgerows of golden spider lilies. A bulbous perennial, it is native to Melanesia. Don't let the yellow foliage trick you into thinking there's a nutritional deficiency! This crinum lily is also renowned for its large, six-petaled white flowers that resemble spiders. Blooming happens through the warm months. The leaves are strap-shaped and glossy, first emerging light green and then blushing progressively deeper yellow with exposure to light. Foliage emerges from the bulb in a tight bundle and forms an arching fountain as leaves extend. The leafless flower stems are topped by a cluster of flowers with very narrow petals that curl backward.

Golden spider lily grows and flowers best in sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Amend sandy soils with organic matter prior to planting. It needs constant moisture during growth and too much shade prevents strong yellow pigmentation and retards flower production. Use it as a specimen or a folaige accent in mixed tropical beds and borders. Cut off the old flower stalks to improve the look of the plant.
