A perfectly growing upright clump, the golden yellow flowers of 'Rowallane Yellow' brighten the summer perennial border magnificently. It is a hybrid made from herbaceous perennials native to southern Africa, bearing arching wands of flowers in mid- to late summer. The six-lobed blooms, which look like miniature daylilies, open on upright stems above pleated, erect, iris-like foliage that is about thigh-high. The plants grow from corms which spread moderately by underground stolons, horizontal stems.
Plant montbretia in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Clay soils must be amended with organic matter for improved drainage. In colder regions, plant it near a wall and protect it with a blanket of mulch applied after the ground freezes. In areas where it is not hardy, dig the corms and store them indoors in potting mix for the winter. Divide the clumps every few years to retain vigor. Grow 'Rowallane Yellow' in mixed borders where you want a splash of bright color. Plant extra for cutflowers. The tubular flowers attract hummingbirds.
