Family

Iridaceae

Botanical Name

CROCUS ancyrensis

Plant Common Name

Spring Crocus

General Description

Opening its bright sunny flowers during some of the dullest and coldest days of the year, this crocus from central Turkey has been a welcome sight in gardens since its introduction to horticulture in the late nineteenth century.

Growing from a small bulb-like storage organ known as a corm, this diminutive herbaceous perennial sends up one or two glowing orange-yellow flowers in late winter or early spring, just as the grassy, gray-green leaves emerge. Held on short, erect, stalk-like floral tubes, the six-"petaled" flowers have yellow anthers and bright orange-red styles. The flowers are sometimes stained purple at the base and on the yellow floral tube. The foliage goes dormant in mid-spring.

Grow this alluring crocus in full sun and fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. It does best in dryish summers and chilly winters. Use it at the front of a border or in a rock garden or trough. It will sometimes self-sow. The cultivar 'Golden Bunch' is exceptionally floriferous.
