General Description
Native to southern India and Sri Lanka, firecracker flower is a vigorous, medium-sized, evergreen shrub that’s best known for its colorful and interesting flowers. Throughout the year it produces clusters of fragrant, broad-lipped blooms in shades of orange, orange-red, gold or apricot. Flower color depends on the variant or cultivar. The leaves are rich green, glossy and have deep venation.
This heat tolerant tropical prefers full to partial sun and fertile soil that is evenly moist but well-drained. If grown indoors, it is easy to care for if provided ample light and regular fertilizer. In tropical and subtropical zones it can be planted as a vibrant low hedge or in mixed shrub borders. In colder locations it makes a great tender bedding or container plant.
In India, the long-lasting firecracker flowers are strung into garlands that are worn in the hair or around the neck. These are offered in Hindu temples and worn for worship. There are many wonderful cultivars to choose from including the sherbet orange ‘Marmalade’ and golden-flowered ‘Florida Sunset.’
