CUPRESSUS arizonica 'Taylor's Silver'

Image of Cupressus arizonica var. glabra 'Taylor's Silver'

Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

CUPRESSUS arizonica var. glabra 'Taylor's Silver'

Plant Common Name

Arizona Cypress, Smooth Arizona Cypress

General Description

A selection of Arizona cypress, ‘Taylor's Silver’ is an upright, evergreen conifer with lovely silvery-blue foliage. The undersides of the scale-like leaves are covered in white resin glands. Small, prickled, round female cones add seasonal interest. The bark is smooth and reddish. With age, this tree's narrow form may become more pyramid-like with a slightly widened base. The parent species is native to the southwestern United States.

Give ‘Taylor’s Silver’ a sunny, dry location and well-drained soil that is not severely alkaline. This fares poorly in climates with thick humidity and wet summers. Best used as large plant screens or windbreaks inland or near the coast, 'Taylor's Silver' would make a nice specimen evergreen in an unirrigated lawn or parking lot median, especially if there is a contrasting dark green grove of trees or building behind it.
