General Description
Truly magical is this selection from Terra Nova Nurseries. Cyclamen ‘Something Magic’ offers a compact plant with stunning foliage and large bright rose-pink blooms. One of the first plants propagated from tissue culture so the individual plants are uniform in size, color and growth requirements.
This is one of the hardiest cyclamen for garden use. Native to the mountains of Bulgaria, Turkey and Lebanon, C. coum is a tuberous perennial. Like many garden cyclamen, it has many desirable qualities including hardiness, durability, lovely foliage, charming flowers, and an ornamental season that different from other herbaceous perennials.
The rounded heart-shaped pointed leaves sport dark green centers surrounded by silver variegation forming a Christmas tree. They appear in fall and are attractive well into spring. Flowers are rose-pink with a burgundy or purple blotch at the base. The petals are backswept giving a shooting-star appearance. These stunning blooms appear winter through spring. The plant dies back in late spring.
As with most garden cyclamen, C. coum ‘Something Magic’ grows well under deciduous trees, or in other sites that are shady but offer bright light in winter and dryish conditions in their summer dormant season. Well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acid to slightly alkaline soil works best. Though they will grow in and around exposed tree roots, rocky or scrub locations. Hardy cyclamen require chilling hours for best growth and do not do well in subtropical and tropical locations. Plant them in masses for best effect.
