General Description
Named for their eye-catching, silver-hearted leaves, cyclamens in this series also feature a tidy compact habit and abundant bloom. These seed-propagated F1 hybrids were selected and bred for production and sale as seasonal container plants. Like other florist's cyclamens they derive from Cyclamen persicum, a tender tuberous perennial from the eastern Mediterranean.
Silverheart™ Series cyclamens form neat rosettes of dark-green, heart-shaped leaves with silver-washed centers. The foliage expands in fall or early winter. Solitary, nodding flowers with five backswept, upright petals are borne on 8-inch (20-cm) stalks in fall, winter, or spring. Cultivars in this series bear weakly scented purple, red, rose, or white blooms. Plants die back to a rounded tuber in late spring.
Florist's cyclamens thrive in bright filtered light; a well-drained, humus-rich soil or mix; cool moist winters; and mild dry summers. They make ideal houseplants for cool sunny rooms and windowsills. Cyclamen persicum also takes well to the garden where conditions are suitable. Smaller cultivars (such as those in the Silverheart™ Series) tend to be relatively cold-hardy.
