Dwarf Papyrus
General Description
This is an aquatic or emergent tender perennial plant native to most of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including the southeastern United States.
A true papyrus, it has green, three-angled, soft, leafless stems which arise from brown, scaly rhizomes (underground, lateral stems). The leaves are generally absent, but a few papery leaf sheaths occur at the base of the stems that are green tinged with red or purple. The summer flowers appear in umbrella-like groups atop thin stems of varying lengths. The tiny inconspicuous flowers are compressed, green to brown and give way to brown nutlets.
A diminutive plant, dwarf papyrus is ideal for calm water edges. It prefers full sun to part shade and moist or wet soil but will grow in upland conditions if well-watered. This papyrus can be grown outdoors where hardy but cannot tolerate prolonged freezing temperatures. Where winters are cold, it should be grown in containers that can be lifted and brought indoors to overwinter. Divide the clumps to thin and propagate. Dwarf papyrus is a pretty plant for water gardens and will naturalize in boggy areas. It is also great for water containers given its compact size.
