DAHLIA 'Colorado'( DAHLINOVA® SERIES) PPAF
Colorado Dahlia, Dahlia
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
A tuberous perennial from the Dahlinova® series of dahlias, 'Colorado' develops into a compact, freely branching, upright mounding plant. It's prized for its nearly fully double (extra petal) flowers with with palest buttery yellow petals. The petals overlap and when the flower head finally opens its widest, it reveals the tiny central tuft of yellow stamens. This hybrid was developed by plant breeders for commercial production as a potted plant.
Few plants rival dahlias as everblooming bedding plants and cut flowers. These herbaceous, warm-season, tender perennials have bulbous underground tubers. Their green foliage is compound and lush. It is good to remove the spent flowers to encourage continued flower bud production up until a killing frost.
Dahlias grow best in a well-drained, fertile soil and full to partial sun. Cultivars are often grown from divisions and cuttings to preserve their unique characteristics. However, dahlias in the Dahlinova® Series may be grown from seeds. In colder regions, sow seeds after the danger of frost has passed in spring, or in the fall (or end of the summer tropical rainy season) in frost-free zones. Dahlias are cold sensitive and their tuberous roots should be lifted and overwintered indoors in a cool, dry location in regions with harsh winters.
