DAHLIA 'Garden Princess'
Cactus-flowered Dahlia, Dahlia, Garden Princess Dahlia
The large, cactus-flowered ‘Garden Princess’ is a classic dahlia for cutting gardens and sunny borders. Is colorful blooms are creamy yellow with fine rosy pink edges. These long-stemmed flowers are ideal for cutting and rise from a tall clump of lush green foliage.
This warm season herbaceous tender perennial grows from bulbous underground tubers and have rich green compound leaves with toothed margins. The colorful flowers appear continuously and are attractive to bees and butterflies. Remove the old buds from spent flowers to encourage heavier flowering.
Dahlias prefer well-drained, fertile soil and full to partial sun. Ideally, night temperatures should be comfortably cool, and days should lack overbearing humidity. Most hybrids are propagated from divisions or root cuttings to preserve their unique characteristics. In colder regions, plant starts after the danger of frost has passed. In frost free zones, they can be planted in fall for continuous winter color. Dahlias are cold sensitive and their tuberous roots should be lifted and overwintered in a cool dry location, where not hardy.
Tall, large-flowered dahlias are unsurpassed for cutting but can take a real beating in heavy rain and high wind. It’s best to stake them to support both the plants and blooms.
