DAHLIA( MYSTIC SERIES)
Dahlia, Mystic Series Dahlias
Dahlias in the Mystic Series bear glossy dark-hued foliage and colorful blooms on strong compact plants that do not need staking. They were developed by renowned plant breeder Keith Hammett of Auckland, New Zealand.
Dahlias are tender herbaceous perennials that grow from plump underground tubers to form lush clumps of compound foliage topped with daisy-like blossoms. Plants in the Mystic Series bear lustrous, green-black to purple-burgundy leaves and flower in shades of red, peach, yellow, or pink. The single, eight-petaled blossoms have a contrasting reddish-brown eye. The strong, dense, well-branched plants stand up to rain and wind.
Few tender perennials beat dahlias as everblooming warm-season bedding plants and cut flowers. They grow best in well-drained, fertile soil and full to partial sun. Remove spent flowers to promote continuous bloom. In cold-winter regions, plant tubers after the last frost date, and lift them in fall for storage in a cool dry location. Cultivars in the Mystic Series are propagated by division and are sold as tubers.
