DAHLIA 'Starsister Scarlet and Yellow'( STARSISTER SERIES)
Dahlia, Starsister Scarlet and Yellow Dahlia
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The dwarf dahlias in the Starsister Series are vigorous, ever-blooming bedding plants. The tidy tender perennials are borne from tuberous roots that can easily be dug and stored indoors where winters are cold. They are bushy and have lush deep green lobed leaves. When conditions are favorable, they become covered with short leafy stems laden with semi-double daisies. These super showy flowers come in shades of lavender, pink, orange, scarlet, crimson, yellow and white. There are also a number of bi-colors and collerette types.
Dahlias prefer full to partial sun and fertile, well-drained soil. For best flowering, night temperatures should be comfortably cool and days should not be too hot or humid. Where tender, lift and store the tubers indoors in loose, dry medium in a cool location. In southern climates they will survive as perennials.
These dahlias are easily grown from seed and should be started indoors in midwinter for late spring planting. Greenhouse grown specimens will begin blooming in eight to ten weeks. When grown under glass they are particularly susceptible to thrips, aphids and whiteflies. They are excellent bedding or container plants. Sadly, their stems are too short for cutting.
