This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Unwin Series dahlias are bedding type dahlias with a vigorous, dwarf habit. The beautiful green foliage is adorned with showy bronze, salmon, apricot, orange, scarlet, crimson, yellow and lavender semi-double flowers when temperatures are warm and remain above freezing. Petals surround a small golden yellow center disc.
Often sold in seed form, 'Unwin Mix' can be started early indoors in very early spring and transplanted out later. They will flower during the latter part of the first season after sowing.
Dahlia prefers fertile, well-drained soil and full to partial sun. Ideally, night temperatures should be comfortably cool, and days should lack overbearing humidity. Summer's heavy rain downpours can give dahlia plants a beating. Ensure plants have good air circulation. 'Unwin's Mix' is perfect to grow from tubers and are excellent bedding or container plants and make nice cutflowers. Lift and store tubers indoors in cold winter regions, whereas in hot, humid tropical climates, more success with dahlias occurs if planted after the summer wet season.
