A real showstopper when in bloom, contrasting bicolor daisy-like flowers atop dark foliage, this is half-hardy hybrid dahlia developed in New Zealand. Mystic Dreamer dahlia -- cultivar 'Zone Ten' -- produces showy pink and white, single-form flowers and burgundy-black leaves with bluntly teethed edges. Each flower petal is pink, but develops white bands on the out edges and a basal blush of rusty dark pink. Plants are well-branched, forming a compact, upright oval silhouette that does not required staking. Each flower displays eight petals surrounding a small rusty mahogany center edged with golden stamens.
Few tender perennials beat dahlias as everblooming warm-season bedding plants and cut flowers. These herbaceous tender perennials have bulbous underground tubers. The blooms are cheerfully bright and long-lasting. Cutting off spent flowers encourages continued flower production on 'Zone Ten'.
Mystic Series dahlias grow best in well-drained, fertile soil and full to partial sun. In cold winter regions, plant tubers after the danger of frost has passed. In frost-free subtropical areas, they can be planted in fall for continuous winter color. Dahlias are cold sensitive and their tuberous roots should be lifted and overwintered in cool dry locations where not hardy. Grow them in containers and as bedding plants when days are sunny and warm and the nights are comfortably cool.
