General Description

The Caucasian daphne bears white flowers over a longer blooming period than other daphne shrubs commonly grown in temperate gardens. Native to Caucasus in western Asia, this deciduous shrub attains a dense, rounded habit. It shows no fall color before the foliage drops off.

The rather small, elongated oval leaves are a medium green, with a slight hint of blue-green. On branch tips, clusters of four to 20 tiny white, four-petaled flowers occur most profusely in late spring. Continued light flowering continues through the summer and into fall until frost. The white flowers are sweetly but delicately fragrant.

Grow a Caucasian daphne in partial sun to partial shade. A well-drained, non-alkaline soil is a must. Loam soils enriched with organic matter and then mulched to keep roots cool and moist is ideal. Use this daphne in the dappled shade of a woodland garden, foundation bed or container. Once planted, avoid root disturbance and pruning, which can lead to awkward dieback or early plant death. In regions with hot summers, this shrub may not live more than five to 10 years before dying, no matter what a gardener does to aid the plant's health.
