Family

Thymelaeaceae

Botanical Name

DAPHNE x burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie'

Plant Common Name

Burkwood Daphne, Carol Mackie Burkwood Daphne

General Description

This attractive selection of burkwood daphne is a small semi-evergreen shrub, but may drop its leaves in colder areas. 'Carol Mackie' is treasured for its fragrant blooms and beautiful variegated foliage. It bears the name of its original owner, Carol Mackie, of Far Hills, New Jersey. This cultivar was then introduced into the trade by the Arnold Arboretum in 1969. It demonstrates exceptional winter cold hardiness.

In late spring, pink flowers that fade to white appear in tight clusters and may also rebloom late in the summer when temperatures cool off. Carol Mackie burkwood daphne has dark green lance-shaped leaves edged with creamy white to light yellow, attractively arranged in whorls. The shrub grows with a slightly wider form than the species.

Humusy, slightly acidic, well-drained soils are important to this plant, consider using it in raised beds in areas with clay soils. Partial sun is best to preserve the quality of the variegated leaves. 'Carol Mackie' should be kept evenly moist and benefits from mulching. A nice plant for the shaded foundation, as a specimen or in a smaller garden, any burkwood daphne can be temperamental and hard to establish and should not be pruned or have its roots disturbed.
