Botanical Name

DELOSPERMA floribundum 'Starburst'

Plant Common Name

Pink Hardy Ice Plant, Starburst Ice Plant

General Description

This beautiful lush-green carpet of succulent foliage with vivid, elegant magenta flowers makes a brilliant addition to the rock garden. This hybrid, ‘Starburst,’ descends from species to eastern South Africa, where they inhabit rocky scree high up on mountain ranges that are cold and exceptionally dry. This plant produces tiny, densely packed leaves. The plant is a clump that spreads gradually into a mat-like form, rooting as it grows to create colonies.

For many weeks in late spring or early summer ‘Starburst’ is a carpet of color. The flowers are large, magenta-pink daisies with many fine petals, each white where it connects to the yellow center. The flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon, with new blossoms emerging each day.

This plant, like most succulents, suffers in cold, waterlogged conditions and poorly drained soils. Give ‘Starburst’ full sun and well-drained, even sandy soil. Though it is most often found in coastal gardens, its cold hardiness brings them to the rock gardens and natural rocky outcroppings in arid mountain ranges. Limit watering in the late fall to ensure roots are dry through the winter months.
