Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
White Ice Plant
The cool, silvery, white iceplant is heat and drought tolerant and blooms over a long period throughout summer and fall. This succulent perennial forms spreading mounds of gray-green succulent leaves that are fleshy and three-sided. The silvery foliage compliments its glistening daisy-like flowers, which draw bees and butterflies. The flowers are followed by inconspicuous brown winged capsules filled with tan seeds.
This native of eastern South Africa naturally inhabits rocky screes on mountainsides where conditions are both cold and dry. So, sunny locations with average to poor, sharply drained soils are ideal. Allow plants to completely dry out between water applications, and limit water in the late fall to ensure roots are dry through the winter months. Cold wet conditions will cause root and stem rot. Delosperma herbeum is easily divided and can be propagated by seed or cuttings.
This is an excellent choice for modern gardeners looking for adaptable succulents with bright white flowers. Plant it in broad shallow containers, stone troughs, rock gardens or pebbly sunny border edges. It also thrives in crevices created in rock wall or stone walkways.
